Why do I need Anti Spyware - All Adware or Spyware is designed to snoop on you. It is often included in shareware or freeware programs, or as cookies downloaded through innocent-looking web pages. In many ways spyware acts like a computer virus: it can install itself without your permission, watch what you do and report information back to its masters. At the very least this could include email address details, the websites you regularly visit and other personal information to help advertisers target you with pop-ups and spam. At worst, spyware can track your keystrokes and deliver passwords and online account details into dubious hands.

The Remedy! - The only remedy is to use a good quality Anti Spyware program to scan, seek out and remove any Spyware or Adware hiding in your computer. Below is the five best Anti Spyware Utilities on the internet.

    How Anti-Spyware Programs Work

Understanding how anti-spyware programs work is very important for choosing the perfect anti-spyware program. Of course, you need not go into the land of extreme detail. Having a general idea of how these programs work is enough, as long as your idea, general or not, is complete. So let's see, in a nutshell, how does an anti-spyware program do its job.

There are two important parts in an anti-spyware program's work: monitoring and detection. Monitoring refers to continuously maintaining a detailed picture of activity, spotting anything that looks suspicious. Detection refers to detecting any spyware that may have gotten on your computer, and monitoring plays an important role here as well.

What should an anti-spyware program monitor? The tempting answer is, well, everything, but there are two catches here. First of all, the volume of activity in a typical computer is simply huge, almost impossible for a single program to monitor without having an adverse impact over the computer's functioning. As a consequence, monitoring is done only at a very high level, and is concerned primarily with how data transmission occurs, rather than with what is transmitted. Furthermore, there is no excuse for invading an user's privacy -- making sure no spyware comes in is no good excuse. As a consequence, spyware programs do not monitor what exactly comes in or out of your computer, and most producers are even reluctant to building up detailed usage statistics.

However, careful monitoring can provide some fairly useful insights. The usual signs of dangers are programs that transmit large volumes of data to a single host, newly installed programs that try to send any kind of data over the network, and programs that regularly transmit small, but steady packets of information. Of course, many of these are false alarms, but this is only part of an anti-spyware program's criteria.

Detection is what comes into place at such a time. Usually, the first step is simply asking the user about any suspicious activity that has been noticed. This is done simply in order to avoid false positives. For instance, it is natural for most newly-installed applications to send data over the Internet. When a user is warned, he will immediately be able to realize something is wrong if the program has not asked for any kind of authorization or the installation program has not alerted the user that some data may be sent "home".

The other important detection method is commonly known as scanning. Anti-spyware programs will examine each file in your system, and use a variety of algorithms in order to detect whether those files could be used in a malicious way.

Usually, an anti-spyware program will simply compare each file with a set of known malicious configurations. If a file's contents are partially or totally similar to what is already known to be a malicious piece of code, then it is marked as being suspect. In most cases, the anti-spyware program is actually right: simple scanning yields almost no false positives.

The other possibility actually refers to a broader set of algorithms, known as heuristic algorithms. These do not rely solely on an established set of known malicious programs, but instead try to guess whether a file belongs to a spyware program or not. A trivial example of a heuristic algorithm would be comparing files to known malicious programs, but not stopping at those with perfect similarity, but also at those that seem to behave similarily in some aspect. In the latter case, the program can still be malicious – and be nothing more than a slightly altered version of the first one.

Heuristic algorithms do have the advantage of being able to detect yet unknown spyware programs. However, they can also generate a lot of false positives. Usually, when a program is suspected to be malicious based on the prediction of a heuristic algorithm, your anti-spyware program should notify you of this. In order to determine the program's true nature, you will have to do some monitoring of your own.

In any case, it is clear that very strong detection algorithms – heuristic or not – are very important for a good anti-spyware program. Detection algorithms are very complex and very difficult to implement efficiently. Efficient programs, like XoftSpySE, can perform hundreds of comparisons per second – which is no easy task. The ability of anti-spyware programs to detect malicious code is essential – in fact, it is their very reason of being – and it should be the first thing to take into account when choosing an anti-spyware program.
